WHAT IS A DOULA?

What does a doula do (-la)?

A birth doula is here to support a birthing person and their partner physically and emotionally before, during and after birth.  I will advocate for you, but will never push my own agenda or tell you what to do.  I work to keep the lines of communication between a birthing person and their care providers open and positive, and make sure that any decision you have to make is fully informed.  My aim is to do whatever can be done to give you the best chance of giving birth how and where you'd most like to, but also to support you throughout, if that plan needs to change.

I attend homebirths, birth centre and labour ward births and c-sections.

It has been shown that having a doula as part of your birth team and present at a physiological birth can :

· reduce the rate of induction

· reduce the use of pain relief

· reduce the rate of an instrumental birth

· reduce the chance of having a cesarean

· reduce anxiety

· shorten labour

· promote a better memory and experience of birth

· increase confidence

· increase the rate of initiating breastfeeding

My support is unconditional : it does not depend on what type of birth you would prefer, what pain relief you choose or indeed your own personal views or beliefs in general.  I will listen to what you need and want over the course of our sessions together before your birth, and make that and a postive experience of birth, my only agenda.
